After spending a long day at work, sometimes the only thing you want to do is hit the sack.
But have you ever had an experience where you were sleeping and then all of a sudden your body jerks and you wake up for no reason? It turns out that this is a pretty common thing.
According to scientists, this is known as the ‘hypnic jerk’. People have tried to explain the feeling, and most people say it feels like you are falling from a great height. Other people have compared it to a demon choking you while you sleep. But why does this happen? What is the cause of this hypnic jerk?
This event is actually related to you and your body. There are a couple of theories but researchers believe they have found the reason behind it. This usually happens when you fall asleep too fast from major exhaustion. The first stage is that your heart rate and breathing slows down too quickly. Going to bed too fast confuses your brain into believing you are dying and that your systems are failing.
In order to get you out of this comatose state, your body responds with a jolt of chemicals that causes you to wake up. This is currently the working theory of the ‘hypnic jerk.’
The other mystery is the visual perception of falling that people see in their dreams just before it happens.
One belief is that parts of your brain working dream creation might be trying to create scenarios that would urge a person wake up. The results? Falling off great heights.
